Summary of Criteria

For more than a century Caltech's community of scholars has thrived in a culture of intellectual excellence, fearless research ambition, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Our small size, agility, and science focus sets Caltech apart from larger universities and enables a deep partnership between leadership and faculty.

We seek a leader who will join our community as a scholar and President.

Our next president will be a strong communicator and will have a record of leading with integrity, courage, and creativity. He or she will have research and educational achievements that are consistent with an appointment to the Caltech faculty. The President will:

  • advance Caltech's leading role in science and engineering research, on campus and at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)
  • promote outstanding education at all levels
  • nurture an environment of inclusive excellence
  • work with the faculty to establish, communicate, and execute an inspiring strategic vision
  • steer the Institute through financial, technological, and societal transitions

The President will be an effective manager who will:

  • align Caltech with best practices in university governance and management
  • assume responsibility for the stewardship of JPL and its capabilities, and work with the JPL Director to guide and oversee its current programs and future plans
  • liaise with R&D agencies and with the state and federal governments
  • build strong relationships with internal and external constituencies, including the trustees

The President will have demonstrated success and personal affinity for initiating, cultivating, and maintaining substantial donor relationships. In this role, the President will play a critical role in shaping the future of science and technology by building partnerships between Caltech and its philanthropic supporters.
